I’m delighted to share my new conversation with OperaWire, in which I talk about some of the repertoire that is particularly close to me — from Verdi and Mozart to Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s extraordinary Das Wunder der Heliane.

We discuss opera, musical storytelling, the relationship between conductor, orchestra and singers, and the challenges — and rewards — of bringing great works to life on stage.

Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane is a fascinating world of extraordinary orchestral colours, intense drama and deep human emotions. Preparing this work has been a very special musical journey, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with audiences at @aalto_musiktheater_essen

Another unforgettable journey comes to an end.

With the final performance of Le Nozze di Figaro, my time at the Savonlinna Opera Festival has come to a close. It has been a privilege to share music with such wonderful colleagues, an outstanding orchestra, chorus, cast, and the entire festival team. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who made these performances so special.

Savonlinna is much more than an extraordinary festival. It is endless summer light, breathtaking landscapes, and magical nights that seem to have no end. The long drives between rehearsals, concerts, and my travels back and forth to Amsterdam and Essen became part of the adventure itself. Along the way I encountered countless wild animals crossing the roads—sadly, not all of them survived the encounters with my car 😞.

I leave Finland with beautiful memories, inspiring music, new friendships, and deep gratitude.

Until we meet again, Savonlinna. ❤️🇫🇮
