The outstanding reviews for Das Wunder der Heliane just keep coming! ✨

Tonight, we return to the stage at @aalto_musiktheater_essen for another performance of Korngold’s magnificent opera.

“Conductor Andrea Sanguineti revels in the score’s sensuous, opulent sound world while bringing razor-sharp precision to its development, confidently commanding the enormous musical forces. Intense passions, great emotions.”

— @neuemusikzeitung

After two concerts at the @philharmonie_essen feat

After two concerts at the @philharmonie_essen featuring Beethoven’s Third Symphony and a recording of Britten’s Violin Concerto, today brought the third performance of Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane at the @aalto_musiktheater_essen . And the reviews keep soaring! ✨

The latest from Der Opernfreund:

“Rarely performed works like Die Heliane are essential to today’s opera scene. […] Andrea Sanguineti and the superb Essener Philharmoniker transported the audience into a veritable musical ecstasy. His interpretation combined an extraordinary richness of colour with remarkable transparency, meticulous attention to detail and sweeping, energy-filled arcs of tension.”

The critic also praised the overwhelming dramatic intensity and the audience’s enthusiastic ovations.

A wonderful recognition of the power of discovering repertoire beyond the familiar. ❤️🎶

✨ Performanc nr. 2 of Das Wunder der Heliane — and an extraordinary response from the press! ✨

The production has been celebrated by critics, and here is the first review from Das Opernmagazin:

“The main event of the evening, however, takes place in the orchestra pit. Andrea Sanguineti confidently keeps his 95 musicians and the monumental late-Romantic score under control. Under his baton, an opulent musical panorama of early modernism unfolds. He allows the music to blossom and shine — and, where necessary, to erupt. Even the sometimes brutal masses of sound never become painful. Sanguineti blends the expressionist colours with a practised hand and delivers the grotesque Shostakovich-like moments with pinpoint precision. And he even conjures up, in the listeners’ mind’s eye, the great Hollywood bathing lake at sunrise in mesmerising, transcendent Technicolor.”

The review also praises the enthusiastic applause for the maestro and the musicians in the pit — growing into even greater ovations at the end of the evening. ❤️

Deeply grateful to our wonderful orchestra, cast and the entire team at Aalto-Musiktheater Essen for bringing this extraordinary work to life!

Don Giovanni – back on stage tonight at Aalto Thea

Don Giovanni – back on stage tonight at Aalto Theater Essen! 🎭

Second performance today of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the @essener_philharmoniker — and once again, a production that leaves a lasting impression.

Mundoclasico described the performance as “Inolvidable” and praised the “nuanced and emphatic” orchestral interpretation, highlighting the strings, mandolin, organ and harpsichord. They also wrote:

“Sanguineti is an intelligent interpreter of this music; he lets it breathe, and with it the singers.”

A particularly interesting observation was that the production’s abundance of visual theses and statements, which caused some astonishment at the time of its premiere, today appear strikingly confirmed by facts that have been publicly reported and documented.

For me, this is precisely what makes Don Giovanni so powerful: Mozart’s music, when allowed to breathe, can reveal both its extraordinary beauty and its disturbing dramatic force.

Tonight, we go again.

Last week I had the great pleasure of being in Cam

Last week I had the great pleasure of being in Camogli as President of the Jury of the 14th International Competition for Opera Conductors “Luigi Mancinelli”, organized by Spazio Musica at the beautiful Teatro Sociale di Camogli.

It was a privilege to meet and work with such a talented group of young conductors, and to share these intense days of music, opera and artistic exchange around Verdi’s Rigoletto.

My warmest congratulations to the prize winners:

🥈 Aleksei Mikhailenko — Second Prize
🥉 Robin Sansen Caldero — Third Prize

Congratulations also to Etienne Ferrer, recipient of the special award for an engagement with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana.

The First Prize was not awarded this year.

A heartfelt thank you to the entire Spazio Musica team, the Teatro Sociale di Camogli, the jury members, the orchestra, singers and, above all, to all the participating conductors for their commitment and passion.

It was a pleasure and an honour to be part of this wonderful experience. 🎶🇮🇹
